Honeymaid, Wholesome, and the Power of Love

What do you do when someone offends you, or tries to hurt you, or goes out of their way to slight you? As persons of faith, we  confess that we would try – huge emphasis on try – to return that hurt with compassion and forgiveness. This is what we see in Jesus’ life and, most acutely, in his death and resurrection: his refusal to return hate but instead to offer love, believing and trusting that love, ultimately, is more powerful than hate.

While I find this message in Scripture regularly, however, it’s also nice to have it reaffirmed in the public square and, at times, in the commercial square. Honeymaid, the company who for years have made the graham crackers of our youth, recently did just that. It’s a story with two parts.

The first involves a commercial they made celebrating the diversity of the American family. Not just noting it, but celebrating it, and in doing so inviting us to think differently, more broadly and compassionately. Second, when they were caught in a backlash of negative email and reactions to their message of inclusiveness, they responded with even more compassion and understanding, refusing to give ground and echoing again their message of love.

It’s not just a great commercial – another instance of the empowerment marketing we’ve noted before – it’s also a great example…for all of us. I’ll put the original commercial below first, followed by their reaction.
