The Power of Gratitude

posted by DJL

Do you have seven minutes to change your life? Really. This is one of the more powerful and important videos I’ve seen in a long time. It’s about happiness. In particular, it’s about the connection between gratitude and happiness. As it turns out, expressing gratitude is one of the most effective ways to increase happiness. Which is what makes this video powerful – not the idea itself, which we’ve explored in other places on this blog – but because the good folks at Soul Pancake actually took research about the connection between expressing gratitude and levels of happiness and replicated the experiment and filmed it for us to...

Luke 19:11-27

As they were listening to this, he went on to tell a parable, because he was near Jerusalem, and because they supposed that the kingdom of God was to appear immediately. So he said, “A nobleman went to a distant country to get royal power for himself and then return. He summoned ten of his...

The Art of Making a Bow

posted by DJL

This TED Talk, by 15 year-old Dong Woo Jang, brings together several elements of recent posts and favorite topics of mine: Grit – the ability to persevere through adversity to pursue a goal. Making things – taking pride in the time it takes to craft something, whether a violin, coffin, or guitar. Creativity – in this case, taking ordinary objects and seeing in them the potential for something else in the hope that it will inspire and touch others. So here’s the backstory: Jang was bored. And since he wasn’t allowed to play video games, he entertained himself by seeking out fallen tree branches from which he intended to make bows....

Luke 19:1-10

He entered Jericho and was passing through it. A man was there named Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax-collector and was rich. He was trying to see who Jesus was, but on account of the crowd he could not, because he was short in stature. So he ran ahead and climbed a sycomore tree to see him,...

Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address

posted by DJL

One hundred and fifty years ago today, Abraham Lincoln delivered a remarkably brief speech of just 269 words as part of the dedication of the Soldiers’ National Cemetery in Gettysburg, PA, just over four months after the decisive Battle of Gettysburg. We call that battle “decisive,” and in the larger picture it was, but at this time the war was hardly over. Though later called the “turning point” of the war, that effort could have been forgotten were there not other monumental victories and, for that matter, Lincoln’s own re-election in 1864. For this reason, he was conscious of the need to remind those in attendance of the...

Then he took the twelve aside and said to them, “See, we are going up to Jerusalem, and everything that is written about the Son of Man by the prophets will be accomplished. For he will be handed over to the Gentiles; and he will be mocked and insulted and spat upon. After they have...

A Note to Subscribers

posted by DJL

Dear Subscribers to “In the Meantime…”, I wanted to write a short note to say several things: First and foremost, thank you. Thank you for reading, for subscribing, for following the journey I’ve been on with this blog and for all your comments and various words of encouragement. You make it worth writing every day. Second, when I put a video in my post, I also place a link under the video to the actual page where the video can be found on the website as I realize the posted videos cannot always be viewed depending on the browsers and email provider in use. But here’s the thing: although I almost never forgot to...

Luke 18:18-30

A certain ruler asked him, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone. You know the commandments: ‘You shall not commit adultery; You shall not murder; You shall not steal; You shall not bear false...

Mockingbird

posted by DJL

It’s not that often that I laugh out loud while reading a poem. But this poem, “Mockingbird” by Louis Jenkins, had me chuckling several times. It so perfectly captures the slightly disconcerting but rather everyday discrepancies in memory we detect when reminiscing with siblings. And...

Luke 18:15-17

People were bringing even infants to him that he might touch them; and when the disciples saw it, they sternly ordered them not to do it. But Jesus called for them and said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of God...
