Luke 6:20-26

Then he looked up at his disciples and said:
“Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. Blessed are you who are hungry now,
for you will be filled.
Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh. Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude you,...

Help! My Daily Bread Dilemma

posted by DJL

I need you help. I started this blog just prior to Ash Wednesday last year with the intention of posting a daily devotion on Mark’s story of Jesus’ passion. It was a way, I thought, of responding to the number of church’s I’d noticed that weren’t producing parish Lenten devotions any more. And then I figured that as long as I had a blog up and going, I could maybe post on something else once in a while Well…the once in a while became everyday (Sundays excepted!) and I enjoyed writing and sharing the Lenten devotions so much that I decided to continue, and so was born the “Daily Bread” devotions. Mark’s story of the...

Luke 6:17-19

He came down with them and stood on a level place, with a great crowd of his disciples and a great multitude of people from all Judea, Jerusalem, and the coast of Tyre and Sidon. They had come to hear him and to be healed of their diseases; and those who were troubled with unclean spirits were...

What is Beauty?

posted by DJL

Of late I seem to have fallen into the topic of gender. I wrote last week about Disney’s efforts to redefine “princess” and about what our movies teach our kids about gender roles, and even this morning in the daily devotions I asked whether we should be concerned that Jesus’ twelve...

Luke 6:12-16

Now during those days he went out to the mountain to pray; and he spent the night in prayer to God. And when day came, he called his disciples and chose twelve of them, whom he also named apostles: Simon, whom he named Peter, and his brother Andrew, and James, and John, and Philip, and...

BSJ: Transfiguration

posted by DJL

Another great piece from our ongoing project, Bible Story Jam, this time on the Transfiguration as found in Luke 9:28-45, the reading many of us will hear in church this Sunday. What kind of mountaintop experiences have you had? What do you make of them? Can you relate them to what happens...

What Does Love Look Like to You?

posted by DJL

Since stumbling upon Kid President’s pep talk last week, I’ve become a huge fan of Soul Pancake. I can’t quite figure out what it is, who they are, or what they’re up to, but I like their stuff nevertheless. So take a look at this short flick they put together on “What does Love look like to YOU?” They sent out this question to the folks following their work and asked them — anyone — to send short video answers. Then they put a number of them together, added a little background music, and voila. The result, I think, is powerful. Anyone up for putting together “What does Faith look like to YOU?” Or maybe, “What...

What Is Prayer?

posted by DJL

We had a fantastic discussion about baptism a week or two ago, one from which I am still learning. I’d like in this post to invite another conversation, this time about prayer. In recent years prayer has become more and more important to me. Not just in my own life, but as I think about the...

Luke 6:6-11

posted by DJL

On another Sabbath he entered the synagogue and taught, and there was a man there whose right hand was withered. The scribes and the Pharisees watched him to see whether he would cure on the Sabbath, so that they might find an accusation against him. Even though he knew what they were...
