The Earth as Art: A Free e-Book and iPad App

posted by DJL

NASA has been taking pictures of the earth from its environmental satellites for the past 50 years. They provide stunning views of the earth’s distinctive patterns and colors and, ultimately, transform the planet into a work of art. Recently NASA gathered a number of these pictures, added brief but helpful commentary, and bound them together into a book. Even better, they made the book free via an e-book (pdf) that can be viewed on any e-reader and as an iPad app. So if you have a little time, you can treat yourself to a unique view of many of the distinct landmasses and waterways that remind us that this good creation is not only our...

A dispute also arose among them as to which one of them was to be regarded as the greatest. But he said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those in authority over them are called benefactors. But not so with you; rather the greatest among you must become like the...

Downton Abbey and Cultural Christianity

posted by DJL

I love Downton Abbey. (Or at least I did until last night. I’m rather undecided going forward.) I love it for many of the reasons I love Mad Men. In addition to strong characters and the elements of love and betrayal and power and suspense that are part and parcel of good narrative, both shows are also period dramas set at particular times and places which aren’t just interesting in general but are experiencing great tumult and change and so help us understand not just something of where we came from but also who we are and where we are going. When we watch the debate over the women’s vote in Downton Abbey (or women’s pay in the...

But see, the one who betrays me is with me, and his hand is on the table. For the Son of Man is going as it has been determined, but woe to that one by whom he is betrayed!” Then they began to ask one another which one of them it could be who would do this. There is so much going on in this...

Absence

posted by DJL

I am on a Billy Collins kick of late. I don’t usually choose from the same poet this often, but you’ll have to forgive me: it’s February. And my school is currently a mess. And I feel I’ve been pulled to one of those unexpected and, frankly, uninvited vocational and existential...

Then he took a loaf of bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” And he did the same with the cup after supper, saying, “This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in...

Behind the Scenes With Kid President

posted by DJL

Kid President has taken the nation by storm. His “pep talk” has had more than 10 million views in the last month and many of his other videos – all designed, as he says, to make grown-ups less boring and the world a better place – have had a wide viewing. But who is Kid President? Turns out, it’s an eight year old boy by the name of Rob. Actually, he goes by Robbie (and not “the Robster,” as you’ll discover). (His last name has been withheld…by his mom.) The other guy behind Kid President is the videographer, producer, and friend, Brad. (I’m not sure who’s withholding Brad’s last name!) But it’s more...

When the hour came, he took his place at the table, and the apostles with him. He said to them, “I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer; for I tell you, I will not eat it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.” Then he took a cup, and after giving thanks...

Faith Beyond Belief

posted by DJL

This is one of the most moving video’s I’ve seen in recent months. Like Wright’s Law, it’s moving because it tells the truth: it tells the truth about how hard life can be; it tells the truth about how important faith is; it tells the truth about the power of love. Here’s the short...

Luke 22:7-13

Then came the day of Unleavened Bread, on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. So Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and prepare the Passover meal for us that we may eat it.” They asked him, “Where do you want us to make preparations for it?” “Listen,” he said to them,...
