Faith, Science, and the Wonder of the Universe Mar06

Faith, Science, and the Wonder of the Universe

I have next to nothing to say about the four-minute video clip below…except that IT IS SO COOL! Really. It comes from Oprah Winfrey’s SuperSoul Sunday program and, whatever you may think of Oprah’s theology or spirituality or whatever, you’ve got to admit she’s got style. 🙂 And resources. And so it’s a wonderfully made short film that raises questions about the relationship between faith and science. And here I’ll be frank: I’ve never quite understood those who see these two in stark opposition. And that includes combatants on both sides. Science is nothing to be afraid of, and faith is not...

Eye-Contact and Intimacy Feb19

Eye-Contact and Intimacy

Okay, so I don’t really know if this qualifies as “science” (the “studies show” is what got to me). But I’d invite you to take four and a half minutes and watch it anyway. It’s just really interesting…and kind of beautiful…and testifies, I think, to our deep desire to be connected to others. So take a look…and maybe even try it out. Notes: 1) If you receive this post by email, you may need to click on the title at the top of the post in order to watch the video. 2) Thanks to the great folks at Soul Pancake for another awesome video. 3) I also found a great article on the...

Fear

What are you afraid of? Something happening to your kids? Losing your health? Not finding a job? What are you afraid of? Fear, of course, is something with which we’re all quite familiar. Too familiar. Why? In particular, why do we spend so much time being afraid when we live in a society...

Invisibilia and the Power of Expectations Jan15

Invisibilia and the Power of Expectations

I am, as you likely know, something of a podcast addict. Given that I am often in the car two to two-and-a-half hours a day, that probably makes sense. Beyond that, this is a great time to be commuting, if you like podcasts at least, because we are entering some of a new “golden age” in the world of radio and podcasts, given the plethora of shows available. This morning, as I was catching up on a favorite – This American Life – I was introduced to a new podcast, Invisibilia, which is Latin for “all the invisible things” and is, in the “about” post on the podcast’s website, “explores the intangible forces that shape human...

What Docs Can Learn from Vets Dec10

What Docs Can Learn from Vets

Maybe I liked this 15 minute TED Talk because it deals with veterinarians and my daughter very much wants to be a vet. Or maybe I love the interdisciplinary approach Dr. Natterson-Horowitz advocates. Or maybe I just see this as another example of the power of embracing diversity, this time embracing the insights one can gain about one species by looking to a diversity of species. Or maybe I just like the word “zoobiquity. Or maybe…. Truth be told, there are a number of reasons I appreciated this TED Talk and hope you do, too. Note: If you are receiving this post by email, you may need to click the title at the top of the post in...

Big History Oct29

Big History

I love David Christian’s concept of teaching “big history.” And by big, he means, really, really big. In this TED Talk, he narrates the history of the universe in 18 minutes. Why? To invite us to place our lives, dreams, hopes, setbacks, and struggles into the largest...
