Luke 23:56b

posted by DJL

On the Sabbath they rested according to the commandment. Of course they did. Rested on the Sabbath, that is. How could they do anything else? They are exhausted. Put yourself in their place for just a moment. Their world has come crashing down around them. Their hopes and dreams crushed before...

Luke 6:1-5

One Sabbath while Jesus was going through the cornfields, his disciples plucked some heads of grain, rubbed them in their hands, and ate them. But some of the Pharisees said, “Why are you doing what is not lawful on the Sabbath?” Jesus answered, “Have you not read what David did when he...

Rules. We tend to love them and hate them. We love them especially when they apply to other people, less so when they’re directed at us. At our best moments, we may realize that rules help us keep ourselves in check, but those really are out best moments…and sometimes they feel mighty...

Sabbath

It’s more that if I have an opening of time, my first thought isn’t to rest and to give thanks for the opportunity to rest. Heck, not only is that not my first thought, it’s pretty much my last thought. Instead, the first (second, third, and fourth as well) thing that occurs to me is, “What...

Mark 3:1-6

Again he entered the synagogue, and a man was there who had a withered hand. They watched him to see whether he would cure him on the Sabbath, so that they might accuse him. And he said to the man who had the withered hand, “Come forward.” Then he said to them, “Is it lawful to do good...

Mark 1:21-28

posted by DJL

They went to Capernaum; and when the Sabbath came, he entered the synagogue and taught. They were astounded at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes. Just then there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit, and he cried out, “What have...
