Luke 8:49-56

posted by DJL

While he was still speaking, someone came from the leader’s house to say, “Your daughter is dead; do not trouble the teacher any longer.” When Jesus heard this, he replied, “Do not fear. Only believe, and she will be saved.” When he came to the house, he did not allow anyone to enter...

Luke 7:18-23

posted by DJL

The disciples of John reported all these things to him. So John summoned two of his disciples and sent them to the Lord to ask, “Are you the one who is to come, or are we to wait for another?” When the men had come to him, they said, “John the Baptist has sent us to you to ask, ‘Are...

Luke 7:11-17

posted by DJL

Soon afterwards he went to a town called Nain, and his disciples and a large crowd went with him. As he approached the gate of the town, a man who had died was being carried out. He was his mother’s only son, and she was a widow; and with her was a large crowd from the town. When the Lord...

Luke 6:6-11

posted by DJL

On another Sabbath he entered the synagogue and taught, and there was a man there whose right hand was withered. The scribes and the Pharisees watched him to see whether he would cure on the Sabbath, so that they might find an accusation against him. Even though he knew what they were...

Journey of the Magi

posted by DJL

Tomorrow, January 6, is the Feast of the Epiphany which falls this year on Sunday. It is the occasion, according to tradition, when the magi from the East reach the newborn Christ and offer him both their gifts and their worship. As is often true of the gospel accounts, they both describe...

For the Anniversary of My Death

posted by DJL

It’s easy during this season of holidays to get so caught up in the preparations – the shopping, cooking, cleaning, errand-running and all the rest – to miss the actual event itself. But if we choose, we can find a moment or two where the we not only observe the holiday but allow it to draw us beyond the ordinary. Which is only appropriate, as the word holiday itself is a combination of words, “holy day,” a day set aside to contemplate and give thanks for the blessings of this life. What I like about W.S. Merwin’s poem “For the Anniversary of My Death” is that it offers us a snapshot or frozen moment of such introspection. It...

Gone Fishing

posted by DJL

I started this blog six months ago as something of an experiment to see if I (and by extension others) can discover how to write on matters of faith and daily life in a way that would be helpful and even (on a good day!) interesting to everyday Christians. Five years earlier I had led the team that developed WorkingPreacher.org, a site devoted to preaching resources. Since it’s launch it’s been a huge success, garnering well over a quarter million hits a month. But as I always tell folks, Working Preacher is the “low hanging fruit.” Preachers have to preach sermons each and so they know they can use good resources that are readily...

A Story for Tomorrow

posted by DJL

I’m not sure just what captured my attention so much about this video. But I think it’s that it didn’t just capture my attention, but my heart and imagination as well. There is something about the videography and narration that is simultaneously, winsome, playful, and...

The Descendants

posted by DJL

I am writing from Hawaii. Oahu, to be exact, and so it seems timely to write about The Descendants. I know it came out last December and was released to DVD a month or more ago, but I can’t stop thinking about it, even when I’m not in Hawaii. Why? Because this film, as much as any that has...

Abundant Life: Behin...

posted by DJL

This week I wrote a column on preaching that I don’t think should be particularly risky but that I know is. It’s about when Jesus says that he comes that we might have not just life, but abundant life. Why should it not be risky? Because it’s about God’s love. So how controversial can...

Response: A Poem for...

posted by DJL

I can’t honestly say why I like New Zealand poet Mary Ursula Bethell’s poem “Response” so much. I think it just feels like a post-Easter, spring-is-in-the air kind of poem. Except it’s more than that, too. Because it’s not just that spring is in the air...
