Wonderful, Merciful Savior

It’s the midpoint of the semester here at Luther Seminary. Which means it’s been a week of midterms, candidacy interviews for second-year students, approval interviews for seniors, and more. There is, at this point of the semester, often a discernible weariness you can detect on the faces of students and faculty alike.

For me, it’s also the midpoint of my regular commute from our new home near Philly to the Twin Cities. Quite frankly, that commute has gone as well as I could possibly have hoped – few delayed flights, just enough time to get work done, and a cleverly arranged schedule (thank you, Office of the Registrar!) that means that for the first time in several years I won’t miss a single class this semester. And yet I have to say it’s good to be at the midpoint and to see the home stretch ahead to being with my family for longer stretches of time.

At the end of this kind of week, I felt like I needed a hymn to buoy my spirits and sing me into the weekend. As you know, I am always intrigued by the ability technology gives us to think differently and creatively about how to present the messages we seek to convey. And certainly that’s true of music. Having greatly appreciated the Virtual Choirs put together by Eric Whitacre, I was instantly taken with this video of musician and vocalist David Wesley’s rendition of the contemporary Christian hymn, “Wonderful, Merciful Savior” (written by Dawn Rogers and Eric Wise).

It was just the thing I needed this Friday, and I hope it sings you into the weekend as well.
