I Have a Dream…

You have heard this speech before. Or at least parts of it, memorable portions here, particularly inspirational sections there. But even if you’ve listed to the whole of what became known as the “I Have a Dream Speech” by the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., you owe it to yourself to take the 17 or so minutes that it takes to listen to it again.

Listen to the cadences and rhythm of this master orator. Listen to the tempered passion and burning hope. Listen to the notes of disappointment and deferred dreams. Listen to the reminder to a nation of its birthright, identity, responsibility and obligation. Listen to the power of moral strength and humility of deep faith. Listen to the public announcement of a vision that stretches from the days of Isaiah to this inaugural day of President Barak Obama and beyond.

Listen for yourself. Listen for those you love. Listen for this nation. Listen for the world. For when Dr. King spoke on that day nearly 50 years ago, God spoke through him, and if we listen carefully we can still catch the echo of the divine voice and vision in the dreams of this humble servant.
